Join Journeyman blacksmith Beth Holmberg for a hands-on half day introductory workshop in the Kenneth D. Kramer blacksmith shop in the historic Percy & Small Shipyard. Perfect for beginners, participants will learn how blacksmithing was an integral part of historic wooden shipbuilding while practicing basic techniques. Learn to use hammer and tongs to forge a marlinspike, a traditional tool used by sailors to loosen knots and splice ropes. Based on an item from the museum’s collection, marlinspikes are still in use today, including by the museum’s own Merrymeeting crew! Take home a unique souvenir and a practical tool.

All materials and safety equipment are provided. Intended for ages 18 and up. Admission to Maine Maritime Museum, good for two days, included with the workshop.

Safety & Accessibility Information

·        Participants must wear 100% natural fiber clothing that fully covers legs and closed toe shoes. Natural fibers include cotton, linen, hemp, and wool.

·        This workshop can be made accessible in many cases, including for seated participants and participants with limited vision or hearing, with advance notice. Please contact reservations@maritimeme.org to discuss options prior to reserving a spot.

·        Ticket holders not wearing appropriate clothing, arriving late, or who cannot follow safety instructions will not be able to participate.
